Write to Your MP
Writing to your MP really can make a difference – especially if a whole community puts pen to paper!
As your elected representative, MPs are there to listen your concerns and ensure that they are raised, where necessary, with the Government. The Government’s plans have not yet been formally discussed by Parliament, so this is an issue that many MPs will not have heard a great deal about yet. You can change that by telling them why the horse tax proposals would have a negative effect on the horse community and urging them to raise this issue with Ministers at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
You can check who your MP is by entering your postcode into the "Find Your MP" page of the UK Parliament website.
You can write your own letter to your MP (see the “Campaign” section of this website for ideas on the case for a rethink of the Government’s proposals) or alternatively you can use one of the following template letters, available to download from this website:
- Letter from horse riders (leisure and/ or competitive equestrian sport)
- Letter from those involved in racing or breeding
- Letter from Equine Veterinarians
Once you are happy with the text of your letter, we recommend that you print it and send via post – the extra time it takes to do this is well worth it as a hard copy letter is more likely to be personally read by your MP than an email.
However, an emailed letter will still be very effective – you can use the link above to locate your MP’s email address.
By taking a relatively small amount of time to write to your MP you can make a huge difference to this campaign!
Once you’ve written your MP, you can take further actions by Signing a 10 Downing Street Petition calling for a rethink of the horse tax proposals.
